Rockets upset Mayfield 27-14

Special 2 video clips at bottom or see  them
on our You Tube Channel

MAYFIELD, Ky. - Quarterback J.D. Gray and his Rockets finally stuck that ticklish feather in their caps – the one that had eluded and even humiliated Crittenden County for years. Beating Mayfield for the first time ever 27-14 will go down in the annals of Rocket lore as one of the greatest chapters in a storied football history.

For the past 13 years, since Mayfield dropped down to play Class A football, the Cardinals had been Crittenden's arch nemesis, beating the Rockets eight times in the playoffs since 1995. Restructuring put Crittenden in the same district with Mayfield last year and the Cardinal mystique seemed like an insurmountable barrier to a district championship.

All that changed Friday night when Gray threw a third-and-long, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to senior receiver Dustin McConnell. As McConnell streaked 44 yards untouched down the sideline, it was like watching a clip for the History Channel.

That image will forever be ingrained in Rocket memory, and just perhaps in the Cardinals' psyche as Crittenden erased 10 straight losses to mighty Mayfield.

The Rockets entered the game ranked 13th in the Associated Press Class A Poll. Mayfield was ninth.

"We just made history," Rocket football coach Al Starnes said as he addressed his team following the game on the hallowed turf at War Memorial Stadium. Beating the winner of seven state championships on their home field will leave a lasting taste in the mouths of all those involved.

"We did this as a team, but we have to give a lot of credit to our seniors and their leadership," Starnes said. "We showed we can win a big game like this, but this is only the beginning."
Starnes and his Rockets will have their sights on winning a district championship for the first time since 2002. Crittenden has won four titles since 1996, but all of those were in the Second District, before they joined the ranks of Mayfield, Fulton City, Fulton County and Ballard Memorial.

Against Mayfield, Gray was unstoppable, rushing for two touchdowns and 157 yards and throwing for two more TDs, both in the final four minutes with the game on the line.

After McConnell's scoring reception with 3:06 to play, Crittenden stopped a rattled Mayfield offense on four downs and took over at the Cardinal 10. Four plays later, Gray found senior tight end Gaige Courtney in the end zone to put the final nail in Mayfield's coffin.

Gray had scored the game's first touchdown in the closing seconds of the opening quarter, but Mayfield answered in the second period to lead 7-6 at the half. In the final two periods, Crittenden scored on three of its four possessions, including Gray's scoring strike to McConnell, which broke a 14-14 tie and gave the Rockets the lead for good.

Crittenden running back Rodney Robertson was back in the lineup after breaking his hand three weeks earlier against Lone Oak. While Robertson carried the ball nine times for 31 yards, his return was an inspiration to the entire team. On defense, Robertson went back to his linebacking slot – and played some at nose guard – and helped the Rockets hold Mayfield to just 108 yards rushing, throwing the Cardinals for a loss or no gain eight times. The secondary was just as strong, breaking up several passes as Mayfield QB Luke Guhy threw for 82 yards by completing half of a dozen passes. Crittenden linebacker Dyllan Thornton intercepted one pass for the game's only turnover.

The victory sets up a major showdown between Crittenden and Ballard Memorial on Oct. 10 at Marion for the Rockets' homecoming game. Mayfield came from behind to beat Ballard two weeks ago and the Bombers knocked of Fulton City this week to go 2-1 in the district. The Rockets, at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, can virtually wrap up the title with a win over Ballard in two weeks.

Pictured above is QB J.D. Gray (14) rushing during the first half as Gaige Courtney (28) comes over to provide some blocking.

Rockets rip Bulldogs 44-13

MARION, Ky. - Gaige Courtney rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns as Crittenden County won a pivotal early First District showdown against Fulton City Friday night.

The Rockets opened the offensive gates in their first contest against a Kentucky Class A opponent, scoring on six of their first eight possessions. On defense, Crittenden got stellar play up front and closed the door on Fulton City's potentially lethal rushing attack. The Bulldogs managed just 24 yards on the ground during the first half while the Rockets were piling up a 30-0 lead at the break.

Crittenden's junior quarterback J.D. Gray was perfect through the air, completing all five of his passes for one touchdown and 78 yards. Gray also rushed for 81 yards in the surprisingly easy win over Class A's No. 15 team. The Rockets came into the game ranked 13th.

The victory was especially important to Crittenden's post-season aspirations as it gives the Rockets an early advantage in the district race. Crittenden plays a key district matchup next week at eighth-ranked and league favorite Mayfield. With Ballard Memorial much improved this season, getting the win over Fulton was a big first step toward securing home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

Rocket coach Al Starnes said his team's play was the most complete effort this season and pointed to less experienced players stepping up and filling important roles as the key factor. He singled out Brian Berry, Dyllan Thornton, Dustin McConnell, J.R. Adams and Andrew Freemen for their improved play.

"We simply got after Fulton and they have a very potent offense," Starnes said. "Across the board, it was the best game we've played this year. Our younger kids are getting better and with their maturity as football players, we're seeing positive results."

The coach also pointed to a tough early season schedule for preparing the Rockets for their district opener. Crittenden's two losses were at the hands of ranked Class 4A teams.

"Gaige Courtney showed he can run the ball effectively and J.D. Grey threw the ball very well," Starnes said. "It was a solid game all around."

The Rockets had a shutout going until late in the game when the reserves allowed the Bulldogs to score on a long pass play. Fulton got another touchdown after picking up its own fumble and going 32 yards in the final minute.

Rockets fall 28-6 at Calloway

MURRAY, Ky. - Crittenden County had the ninth ranked team in Class 4A on the ropes early, but turnovers killed the Rockets hopes of an upset as Calloway County cruised to a 28-6 victory.

The Rockets trailed 7-6 near the end of the first half then it failed to stop the Lakers on an 81-yard drive to the end zone before fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Calloway punched in another touchdown after the turnover and just before the half for a 20-6 edge.

Laker quarterback Casey Brockman stretched the Crittenden secondary for 242 yards on 18-for-37 passing, which included two touchdowns. Brockman also rushed for another.

The Lakers scored just once more in the last half after Crittenden fumbled near midfield. Calloway also intercepted two Crittenden passes late in the game.

It was the Rockets second straight game against a ranked Class 4A opponent. Crittenden lost to sixth-ranked Lone Oak the previous week. This time, the Rockets were playing without leading rusher Rodney Robertson who broke his hand in the Lone Oak game. He is expected to be out for at least four weeks.

In the wake of Robertson's injury, Crittenden spread the field and went largely to the air against Calloway. Junior quarterback J.D. Gray completed half of his 20 passes for 64 yards. One bright spot was the emergence of sophomore Brian Berry as a receiver. Berry has played nearly every position on the field in the past two years – even quarterback and lineman – and Friday he caught three passes for 39 yards. He has two different jersey numbers to fit his various roles and wore both of them Friday at Calloway.

Following the game, Berry said he was glad to help the team in any capacity. He is looking forward to getting into the Class A district schedule starting next week with the Rockets' first home game against Fulton City, a 37-13 winner of Fulton County Friday.

The Fulton City game will also be Young Rockets Night and the Hall of Fame Game. Young Rockets are going to be recognized starting at 7 p.m., and the Hall of Fame induction for the 1945 Marion High and 1963 Crittenden County High teams will be at halftime.

Records and offers

Paducah Sun sports writer Dusty Luthy's blog has a couple of tidbits that might interest Rocket fans. It seems that Lone Oak quarterback, Jamarielle Brown, who largely beat Crittenden himself last week, has several college offers and a Big 10 school is also calling.

Additionally, Lone Oak's coach, Jack Haskins, is the school's all-time winningest coach despite being at the McCracken County school for only four seasons.

Ironman is Out

LATEST UPDATE: Rocket senior Rodney Robertson, the team's strongest player and record-setting running back, will have surgery Thursday on his hand which was injured in last week's loss against Lone Oak. Doctors will put a plate over the broken bone in his hand.

Robertson is a three-time Ironman competition winner, the contest the team holds prior to season that determines strength, speed and agility.

Robertson broke the middle metacarpal bone in his left hand. He saw a doctor Monday afternoon who recommended surgery.

It appears that he will be out for at least six weeks.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Robertson update

While X-rays Friday night confirmed that senior running back Rodney Robertson indeed broke the middle metacarpals bone in his left hand, it's still unclear what the long- or short-term prognosis will be.

Robertson was wearing a soft cast on the hand and forearm, and his left arm in a sling Saturday. He was unable to see a doctor this weekend and plans to do so Monday. At that time, it will become clearer whether Robertson will be able to play again this season.

If he is able to play, he will certainly be wearing a cast, which would limit his offensive effectiveness.

It's highly unlikely that Robertson will be able to play next week at Calloway County.

Rockets fall to Lone Oak 54-13

PRINCETON, Ky. - Crittenden County pulled to within one point in the second quarter on a touchdown by senior running back Gaige Courtney, but suffered a major loss on the previous play when Rodney Robertson broke a bone in his left hand.

Robertson, a senior running back and linebacker who rushed for a record five touchdowns and 258 yards the week before, injured his hand just before Crittenden scored its second touchdown of the game. He left the field and went to Caldwell County hospital where X-rays revealed a break in one of the small bones in hand. The prognosis is unclear at this time.

After Robertson left the field, Crittenden's offense and defense were short-handed and the team's confidence was nearly shattered. At the time, the Rockets stood toe-to-toe with the 10th-ranked team in Class 4A. However, a narrow 14-13 Crittenden deficit turned quickly into a Lone Oak rout.

The defending state finalists showed no mercy, scoring two quick touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half for a 27-13 lead.

Lone Oak, led by the passing and rushing of senior quarterback Jamarielle Brown, poured on the coal in the third period, scoring three times in that frame and winning the opening game of the Trice Hughes Bowl going away.

Courtney put Crittenden up early in the game on a 61-yard scoring pass from QB J.D. Gray. Back-to-back touchdowns by Lone Oak set the stage for Coutney's second TD to cap an 81-yard drive. But after Robertson left with a broken hand, Crittenden failed to get anything going on offense and the defense was sliced to pieces by Brown & Co.

Brown, who is being recruited by several Division 1-AA teams and even some Division I schools, threw for 282 yards and rushed for 71. He completed 15 passes to nine different receivers before turning the controls over to his reserves in the fourth period.

Crittenden's coaching staff got an opportunity to look at some of its younger players late in the game, too. Several caught the coaches' eyes with their aggressive play.

Gray led Crittenden with 54 yards rushing and he completed 8 of 17 passes for 102 yards.

Defensively, Crittenden had no answer for Brown and his spread offense. The Oakers piled up 460 yards total offense and Brown threw for four TDs.

This was Crittenden's second appearance in the Trice Hughes Bowl at Caldwell County High School. Last year, the Rockets lost 49-6 to Glasgow. Next year, Crittenden will likely play Hopkins Central in the bowl.

Next Friday, the Rockets play at Calloway County, another Class 4A opponent.

MS Rockets beat Browning Springs

Crittenden County Middle School beat Browning Springs 20-14 Thursday night at Madisonville.

The win was a major milestone for the Rocket middle schoolers. Browning Springs is widely considered one of the best teams in the area and perhaps the toughest on the CCMS schedule.

Crittenden seventh-grader Brenden Phillips scored the winning touchdown on a one-yard carry with 11 seconds to play. Phillips scored earlier in the game, too, and lineman Stephon Cozart scored the other touchdown on a fumble recovery.

The Rockets are 2-0.

Hart celebrates win

Here are some photos of Brad Hart (55) taken at UK's 27-2 victory over Louisville last weekend.

Hart is the starting long-snapper for the Kentucky Wildcats and a former Rocket football player. He is in the center of the bottom photo, pumping his fist after the victory.

Thompson no longer at IU

Former Crittenden County lineman A.J. Thompson is no longer on the football roster at Indiana University.

According to Jeff Kaeg, a spokesman for the football program, Coach Bill Lynch announced a couple of weeks ago that Thompson would be transferring.

No other details are available at this time.
