Gray sets new records

Rocket quarterback J.D. Gray added his name to three more records Friday. For much of the way, Gray took his team's offense on his shoulders and nearly pulled off a great upset at Mayfield. His three touchdowns moved his name to the top of some mighty impressive lists in Rocket football history.

Gray's 40 career rushing touchdowns, 48 total touchdowns and 306 career points are now school records.

Great game, and great career! He will be sorely missed on Friday nights.

Season Ends: Mayfield 31, Crittenden 28

MAYFIELD, Ky. – Virtually no one gave the Rockets a prayer against the second-ranked team in the state. The prejudice was clear and frank.

Exhibit A: Mayfield's 42-7 win at Crittenden four weeks ago.

Exhibit B: The Cardinals multi-faceted offense that had posted 118 points in two post-season games.

Exhibit C: A Cardinal defense that stymied Crittenden in the first matchup and had not allowed a single point in the playoffs.

Oddsmakers didn't even need to sharpen their pencils to figure this one. The sequel was sure to be more of the same. Even Mayfield coach Joe Morris admitted it.

"Everybody thought we were going to blow them out, but I will tell you they're a good football team. They'd only lost two games. They whipped us in the first half," Morris said. "We were fortunate to come out of it with a victory. We made some mistakes; they made some mistakes; we just found a way to win."

Eke out a win they did. Mayfield took advantage of a couple of Rocket mistakes on special teams to escape with a 31-28 state quarterfinal victory. The difference was by the slightest margin and every play had consequences. The ones that stuck out after the game's end were mistakes, but it took a tremendous effort for the seventh-ranked Rockets to be in a position as spoiler late in the game.

Crittenden still had its chances in the waning minutes after holding Mayfield on downs at the Rocket 26. However, three passes and one run failed to produce anything against a Mayfield defense that played with more inspiration in the second half behind freshman leader Jonathan Jackson at linebacker. His playmaking late stopped the Rockets on crucial downs.

"When you get blown out by a team like we did the first time, it would be easy to not come out and play," said Rocket coach Al Starnes. "We had a couple of special teams breakdowns and that was the difference in the game. Otherwise the kids played great.

"Credit Mayfield. We had them on the ropes. We had a chance to win the game, but they stepped it up when they had to," he added.

Crittenden led 28-17 in the second half, but two unanswered Mayfield touchdowns in the fourth period sealed the deal for the seven-time state champion Cardinals. Mayfield – winner of 19 First Region titles – will host Beechwood next week with the winner earning a trip to the state championship game at Bowling Green.

Mayfield embarrassed the Rockets during the regular season, but senior lineman Aaron Berry said he knew this time it would be different. Starnes said his plan to try to out-scheme Mayfield the first time backfired. This time, he asked his boys to simply line up and compete in a traditional Crittenden style of smash-mouth football.

"Never count the Rockets out," said Berry. "That was fluke the first time. We knew they had threats, we just had to limit them."

Crittenden's defensive line set the tempo in the first half while Rocket quarterback J.D. Gray rushed for two touchdowns and 174 of his game-high 205 yards. A muffed punt gave Mayfield a short field on its first touchdown and the Cardinals sustained a late first-half drive to trim Crittenden's lead to 21-17.

Right after halftime, where close games are often won or lost, the Rockets had opportunities to tighten the noose, but failed. When Mayfield running back Tyreese Murrell fumbled on two consecutive series in the third period, Crittenden could not capitalize.

"That hurt us," Starnes said. "If we could have gotten something right there it might have given us the momentum."

The Rockets did manage to score after a short Mayfield punt gave them good field position in Cardinal territory. Gray found the end zone from 25 yards out to give his team an 11-point lead with 4:39 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Mayfield snatched the tempo after Xavier Shelton, the Cardinals highly talented receiver, caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Guhy then Taylor Sullivan blocked a punt to set up the go-ahead TD by Murrell with just over eight minutes to play.

Minus giving up those late TDs, Crittenden's defense was relentless. Dylan Clark, Dyllan Thornton and Berry were playmakers the whole game, as were others.

The Rockets had a couple of late offensive series, but never got the ball across midfield. Starnes described the close encounter with a second straight regional championship as somewhat of a moral victory after playing so poorly against Mayfield in the regular season matchup.

"I am proud of these guys. As coaches, all we can ask is that they give it their all and play with heart. They did that. They gave everything they had," the coach said.

So for those who might have prejudged the Rockets, hear this evidence:

Exhibit A: Crittenden lost only three games this season to teams that finished a cumulative 24-2.

Exhibit B: The Rockets were within four points of an unprecedented second straight trip to the Class A Final Four.

Exhibit C: When few believed, Coach Starnes and his boys brought their best to the field and nearly made history. Nothing short of an heroic Mayfield comeback prevented the mighty Cardinals from falling for a second straight year to the Rockets.

Now judge.

Rockets advance to regional title game

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Quarterback J.D. Gray saved his best performance of the season for the regional semifinals, but it took even more for Crittenden County to pull off a gripping 31-27 victory Friday at Louisville Holy Cross.

Gray rushed for a season-high 177 yards and became just the third player in school history to gain more than 3,000 in a career. Suspecting that ninth-ranked Holy Cross couldn't stop his versatile playmaker, Rocket coach Al Starnes called Gray's number on 23 rushing plays – the senior's most carriers in a single game this year.

To punctuate his rushing effort, Gray added a punt return for a touchdown, 111 yards on kickoff and punt returns and completed 7-of-9 passes for 39 yards. He also rushed for one touchdown.

"It was evident J.D. was the one we were going to," said coach Al Starnes, who picked up his first road playoff victory in 11 tries. "We didn't feel like Holy Cross could shut him down the whole time. We wanted to put the ball in his hands, and he was big for us."

Despite Gray's splendid performance, it took a few gut-wrenching plays late in the contest for the sixth-ranked Rockets to prevail and earn their second straight trip to the Class A First Region championship game. Crittenden plays at Mayfield next week, squaring off against the same team it beat for last year's regional title.

Holy Cross used a big play or two, and some special teams extras to make the semifinal game closer than most had predicted. The Second District champion Cougars played with ferocious intensity most of the contest, and led 27-24 after a Matt Hans' 80-yard punt return with just under four minutes to play.

"I have to give them a lot of credit, they never backed down. When we got up on them, they never laid down," said Starnes. "It was two hard-nosed teams battling it out the very end."

Crittenden jumped ahead 18-7 at the half, but Holy Cross took the tempo back in the third period, running between its tackles to establish a firm running attack and going ahead twice in the second half thanks in part to an interception returned for 44 yards and the long punt return.

Starnes had said going into the game that special teams could make the difference. They almost did for Holy Cross. Consider that the Cougars scored nine points on special teams while Crittenden posted seven. Figure, too, the Rockets at minus-five on point-after attempts and the scales weighed heavily in the host's favor.

"I thought we needed to score off special teams, but special teams are more than that," Starnes said. "It's the kicking game that determines field position. We didn't do as good a job as we needed to, but D.T. (Dyllan Thornton) made a big play by blocking their last extra-point kick then he came on an kicked one for us after we scored," said Starnes.

Indeed, Thornton's play loomed large when Crittenden clung to a four-point lead as Holy Cross moved deep in Rocket territory in the waning seconds. The Cougars got some convenient calls on their final drive, including a face mask and pass interference penalty. Those infractions alone moved Holy Cross down the field and left it with one extra play even after time had expired. Due to the face mask penalty, the hosts got one last shot from the Rocket 12, but senior Dyllan Clark had Holy Cross quarterback Cameron Scott in his grasp as he misfired on a final pass.

For Clark it was fitting retribution for a couple of earlier penalties that cost his team dearly in the field position battle.

"That just shows how the kids never quit. Dylan was out there with cramps, but he kept pressure on the quarterback at the end," Starnes said. "Everybody stepped it up there at the end and dug down deep to stop them."

Although Gray was in the spotlight most of the game, his backfield and receivers made big plays when the Rockets needed them. Andrew Freeman – coming off a career game a week earlier – didn't get a touch until the fourth period. Yet when he finally got the ball, the junior rushed for a 13-yard touchdown and caught a big 14-yard pass on second-and-long that took Crittenden to the Cougar two, setting up the game-winning touchdown.

The final score was carried across the goal line by Brian Berry as the Rockets went to the power-I with Devin Wallace and Freeman as the blocking backs. Following the touchdown, Critenden placekicker J.R. Adams – who had struggled the entire game – missed the point-after, but Holy Cross was whistled for roughing the kicker. Starnes opted to let Thornton try the next one and he split the uprights, giving his team an important four-point advantage.

"It was clear that (Adams) was upset with himself," Starnes said about the kicker, who has been battling a groin injury the last couple of weeks which has hurt his consistency. "So we didn't want to put him in that situation again."

Thornton, the longsnapper, was relieved by Bowe Wallace at center then took care of kicking the PAT himself.

"That meant they had to get a touchdown at the end. A field goal wouldn't do them any good," Starnes said. "That was important."

Rockets cruise in playoff opener

MARION, Ky. – After two bruising weeks to end the regular season, Crittenden County needed a respite from its brutal western Kentucky schedule and got just what the coach ordered.

The seventh-ranked Rockets dispatched Louisville's Kentucky Country Day 48-9 in the first round of the Class A playoffs with a solid running game and stern defense. Starters were off the field for Crittenden late in the third period after the Rockets led 48-0.

With so many of Crittenden's players nursing nagging injuries, it was a great opportunity to rest the regulars and allow the reserves to finish off an easy opening-round victory.

Running back Andrew Freeman rushed for a career-high 161 yards on 18 carries with bracemate Brian Berry among those sidelined with injuries. Freeman carried three touchdowns and quarterback J.D. Gray ran for three more on 115 yards as he became the fourth leading rusher in Crittenden County football history.

Crittenden was fierce out of the chute, scoring on its first four possessions and six times in the first half. The Rockets were ahead 21-0 after running a dozen plays to start the game.

Meanwhile, the defense was impenetrable on the ground. Crittenden threw Bearcat runners for minus-9 yards rushing and the first team secondary held the full-throttle passing attack of KDC to about 100 yards. The Bearcats finished with 177 through the air, but about 80 came late against the backups as the guests posted a late field goal and touchdown in the fourth period.

The defense forced two fumbles as Dyllan Thornton and Dylan Clark picked up the loose balls. Both turnovers led to Rocket  touchdowns.

It was the second straight victory over the private Louisville school in as many meetings in the first round of the playoffs. Crittenden beat the Bearcats 47-0 last year en route to a regional title.

The Rockets will travel to Louisville Holy Cross next week for the regional semifinal round. The Saints beat Fulton 62-0 at Louisville. Elsewhere Mayfield dominated Caverna 70-0 and Ballard Memorial eked out a win at Bardstown 33-28 over Bethlehem. The Bombers will be at Mayfield for the other First Region semifinal next week.
