Rockets fall short in overtime playoff game

HAWESVILLE, Ky. – If you look at it one way, Hancock County had the odds in its favor when the Hornets forced overtime in the Class 2A playoff matchup Friday against Crittenden County.

The home-standing Hornets had already played two overtime games this season on their own turf. They had lost both – once to 5A Grayson County in the season opener and in Week 7 to 2A district foe and third-ranked Owensboro Catholic.

Third time was a charm for Hancock as it took just one offensive play in OT to edge the Rockets 27-21 and dash Crittenden County's hopes of turning an otherwise grueling season into playoff bliss. Instead, it was Hancock that celebrated following a 10-yard run by Justin Hamilton to seal a comeback victory and advance to the regional semifinals against Murray.

Murray beat Union County 14-6 to advance to the semifinals.

The Rockets had first chance to draw blood in overtime, but after three plays, including a five-yard delay-of-game penalty, Crittenden was facing fourth-down and 13. Enter kicker Micah Holloman, who had made five field goals this season and was perfect on three extra points during the game. However, the soggy field provided feeble footing for the sophomore kicker, and he slipped planting to make the attempt. The ball went under the crossbar.

Hancock did not waste this overtime opportunity and tossed the ball to Hamilton, its top rusher this season. He flanked the line and weaved through the Rocket defense backfield to the end zone.

"Our kids did a great job," Rocket coach Al Starnes. "I'm proud of them after all the adversity we've faced this season. We'd battled adversity all year long and we battled in this game to the end."

It was an unlikely ending for a team that was at times near the brink of collapse. Hardly anyone expected Crittenden had a chance to beat Hancock. Injuries and other disciplinary issues had left the Rockets shorthanded for every game except its first. In this one, Crittenden was playing without one of its best lineman, Eli Bebout, who was ejected two weeks earlier and forced to sit out, and perhaps its top defensive player, Devin Wallace, who blew out a knee a month ago.

Otherwise, most other personnel problems had been resolved and it appeared early that the Rockets were poised for an upset. Crittenden took a 7-0 lead on a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Bryce Willis to Dustin Hernandez. Crittenden forced the Hornets to punt on their first two series of the game, and the Rockets were moving the ball on offense. Leading by a touchdown, Crittenden had driven the ball to the Hancock 12 thanks to a 26-yard pass to Gardner. However, a holding penalty helped stall the drive and the Rockets turned it over on downs.

"If we score again there in the first half, it puts a lot of pressure on them," Starnes said. "But down just one touchdown they didn't panic and they were able to do what they do best – run the ball."

The Hornets rushed for just 61 yards in the first half because Crittenden's offense dominated play and kept the ball most of the time thanks to three long drives. The second half was a different story. Hancock piled up 147 yards rushing the last two periods, and completed its only two passes, one of which set up a game-tying touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The momentum changed at that point. Hancock tied it with a touchdown run by Hamilton and fullback Dylan Hubbard added a crucial two-point conversion run. It turned a 21-13 Crittenden lead into a temporary stalemate with six minutes to play. The Hornets desperately needed that conversion run after it had missed an extra-point kick following their second touchdown.

"I knew if we didn't score (on the last drive) it was going to be tough because we were having trouble stopping their running game," Starnes said.

His team had a chance to close the deal in regulation, but after driving 40 yards time ran out with Crittenden 28 yards from the goal line.

Madisonville cruises to 49-0 win at Rocket Stadium

MARION, Ky. – Outmatched for the second week in a row, Crittenden County was helpless against the superior strength and speed of 9th ranked Madisonville from Class 4A.

The Maroons scored on their first play of the game when Jawan Combs went 60 yards for a touchdown. They tacked on two more rushing TDs of 64 yards and one of 57 yards. Tray Carr, a player area OVC colleges are courting, threw two touchdown passes, both to Dean Summers. Carr also ran for a touchdown.

At one point early in the game, Madisonville had run just four offense plays from scrimmage and had amassed three touchdowns. Through three quarters, Madisonville had run 21 plays and scored seven touchdowns – making a full one-thrid of their snaps worth six points.

Crittenden's best chance to score turned into six points for the visiting Maroons. The Rockets used a fumble recovery to help them get deep into Madisonville territory. When the drive stalled, Rocket placekicker Micah Hollamon tried a 30-yard field goal which was blocked. Combs scooped it up and went the other way 89 yards for a touchdown.

Rocket running back Grant Gardner led all rushers with 97 yards on 22 carries.

It was the third shutout for the Rockets this season; however, the teams that have kept them scoreless have all been ranked among the Top 10 in Class 2A, 3A and 4A – Murray, Tilghman and Madisonville.

Crittenden will play at Hancock County next week in the Class 2A playoffs. Madisonville hosts Allen County-Scottsville.

Caldwell dominates Rockets 46-16; gets home field

MARION, Ky. – If there was any doubt which team was second best in the Class 2A First District, Caldwell County let the question linger no more than six or eight minutes into Friday's showdown at Marion.

The Tigers scored early and often, staking claim to the No. 2 seed in the district and home field advantage for the playoffs. Caldwell outmanned the Rockets from front to back en route to a 46-16 victory.

Crittenden will settle for third place in the league and a long road trip to Hancock County to play the Hornets in the post-season's first round. Hancock (5-4) beat Bulter County 25-20 in Friday's game to decide second place in the First Region's Second District. Butler, who finishes third, will play at Caldwell in two weeks.

Hancock County's only loss in Class 2A action was an overtime setback to second-ranked Owensboro Catholic, who will host Reidland in the playoffs. Murray, ranked No. 4 in the latest AP Poll, will host Union County in the first round of the playoffs.

Caldwell County's passing attack, triggered by 6-foot-5 freshman Elijah Sindelar, was undaunted by the Rocket defense. Sindelar completed 20 of 26 passes, shredding the Crittenden secondary for 350 yards. Senior flanker Tez Sivils caught five passes for 157 yards and he rushed for 35 on just two carries. Sindelar threw four touchdown passes, a pair to Sivils and one each to senior Tanner Vivrette and freshman Jaylen Boyd.

Boyd also rushed for a couple of touchdowns and led the Tigers with 52 yards on the ground.

"We knew what they were capable of," Rocket coach Al Starnes said. "You have to give Caldwell County all the credit."

Crittenden scored a field goal on a 30-yard Micah Hollamon kick in the third quarter, trimming the Caldwell margin to 34-3. The Rockets tacked on a couple of late touchdowns on runs by Bryce Willis and Grant Gardner, who finished with 142 yards rushing. However, the Rockets managed little offense in the first half, when Caldwell was making it perfectly clear which team was in charge of securing home-field advantage for the playoffs.

Willis lifts Rockets into Class 2A playoffs

LA CENTER, Ky. – Crittenden County's football season went from zero to 35 in a hurry Friday night at Ballard Memorial.

No. 35 that is.

That would be Bryce Willis, who only a few hours earlier had been feeling the drain of a 103.4-degree body temperature brought on by strep throat. It didn't matter though. Willis posted 260 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to make sure his Rockets will finish no worse than third in the Class 2A First District.

Crittenden beat Ballard 28-14 under some pretty extreme circumstances, none any more acute than an illness that hit the senior running back the day before this crucial league matchup.

"I've been pretty sick. The doctor gave me a shot and some pills yesterday," Willis said with a grimace that told the real story.

Truth is, the narrative would have never included Willis bailing out. No, not at this point when his team was down to just 18 players and its back was to the wall. This, remember, is a team he once quarterbacked. Now, with injuries, disciplinary issues, defections and suspensions, Crittenden needed him elsewhere. Rocket coach Al Starnes has said all year that Willis is one of the most unselfish players on the team. He just wants to win, the coach has said.

Win, it did, and on a stage that could have played like a Shakespearean tragedy. Coach Starnes said his team was as short-handed as any had been in his 21-year tenure at CCHS. The Rockets put 11 guys on the field and there were only nine in reserve. It could have been a recipe for disaster.

"It's still our best 11 against their best 11," Willis said. "There were some expectations, and I think we exceeded what everyone expected."

Inspired by the arduous task at hand, the few and proud Rockets turned in a heroic defensive effort that held Ballard to just 88 yards rushing. Although its secondary was stretched at times – for two touchdowns and 127 yards – it was an interception by safety Clint Asbridge that sealed the deal with 40 seconds left.

It was clear early in the game that Willis – who had deferred the QB position to backup sophomore Travis Gilbert a week earlier – was prepared to take this one on his shoulders. He lined up at tailback and fullback, rushed for 189 yards on 28 carries and caught four passes for 71 yards.

Willis put Crittenden ahead with two second-quarter touchdowns on a 10-yard pass from Gilbert and a 15-yard run where he pulled three defenders across the goal line. From there, Ballard was in catch-up mode the rest of the way. The Bombers' passing game brought them close. The hosts were within seven to start the fourth period, but the Rocket defense held firm. Pressure on the passer forced some bad throws, and coverage by backup Crittenden cornerbacks Noah Dickerson and Jamie Atwell was sure enough to stave off Ballard's late challenge.

For Starnes, this may have been one of sweetest wins in two decades.

"We needed this. We needed something positive after all of the negative things we've had," he said. "These kids played through adversity and I have never been more proud of a group than this bunch of guys."

The victory means Crittenden County, 3-5 overall and 2-1 in district play, can pull off a show-stopper next week when it hosts Caldwell County. The Tigers had seven turnovers in a loss to Murray Friday, making their showdown with the Rockets a game for second place in the league.

The victory at Ballard was especially critical. A loss might have eliminated Crittenden from the playoff scene altogether. Something that hasn't happened in ages.

MURRAY, Ky. – With 11 players sideline, including the Rockets first five running backs, it's no wonder Murray had little trouble dispatching Crittenden County 35-0 Friday at Ty Holland Stadium.

Injuries and other personnel issues are mounting like the black plague. Nearly one-third of the Rocket team was unavailable for play in the crucial Class 2A First District matchup.

The loss means Crittenden (2-5, 1-1) will have to find enough bodies to steal a win from Ballard Memorial next week in order to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Murray (5-1, 2-0) put itself in position to face off against Caldwell County (4-3, 2-0) next week with the district title on the line. This is the first season for the new alignment with Crittenden, Caldwell, Murray, Ballard and Reidland in the same league. Reidland – a team the Rockets have already defeated – beat Ballard 41-13 Friday. The Bombers are now 3-4 overall and 0-3 in district play.

For the Rockets, survival was objective No. 1 at Murray.

Count them, four running backs were on the shelf going into the game, including leading rusher Dustin Hernandez, Grant Gardner, Brenden Phillips and Bowe Wallace, who hasn't played a down this year because of chronic back problems.

The Rockets worked all week to get senior Devin Wallace – normally an offensive guard – ready at fullback, and coach Al Starnes put quarterback Bryce Willis at tail back. Backup QB Travis Gilbert went behind center for the first time in three games. That strategy fell to pieces in the first quarter when Wallace – a linebacker, too – sprained his knee trying to chase down a defender who intercepted a pass.

By then, Crittenden was limping along with its No. 6 running back getting carries and the offense stalled. Zach Tinsley came off the bench and rushed for a game-high 55 yards, but it was hardly enough to match Murray's versatile attack.

Tiger quarterback Kendall Deese threw three touchdown passes and tailback Dylan Boone rushed for two more. Murray scored its first two touchdowns after interceptions gave the hosts great field position.

Wes Evers caught six passes from Gilbert for a team-high 41 yards. The backup Rocket QB threw 22 times and completed 10 as his team was in catch-up mode all night.

Micah Hollamon became the first CC player to ever kick three field goals in a

career after making his attempt in the second quarter of last week's game. He

broke a tie with Chad Perryman, Jeremy Lander, and Sean Thompson which each

had made three in their careers.

The 82-yard Kickoff Return for a Touchdown by Dustin Hernandez against Marshall

County measures as the 22nd longest kickoff returned for a touchdown in school

history. David Beverly has the longest return with a 99-yard score versus Fulton

Rockets looking to recover lucky charm

MARION, Ky. – Somewhere there's a blue rabbit's foot with Al Starnes' name on it.

Just out of reach .... was this pass intended for Travis Gilbert (14),
and so was the game as Crittenden lost by five points.

If you find it, please return to Crittenden County High School. Because without the lucky charm, misfortune continues to haunt his Rockets. The bad luck continued Friday night as Crittenden missed an opportunity to beat a much bigger opponent, Class 6A Marshall County (4-2). The Marshals prevailed 15-10.

Crittenden County (2-4) – hobbled by injuries and other personnel issues early this season – finally had virtually everyone back for the non-district matchup against Marshall. Finally, all cylinders would be in motion, Starnes and his coaching staff thought.

Then, it was as if a black cat darted in front of the Rockets' path.

Crittenden fumbled on the game's second play, giving Marshall an easy first touchdown on a short field. The next series, Rocket quarterback Bryce Willis had a screen pass batted errantly into the air on a crucial third-down play deep in his own territory. Willis – in a rare action – caught the ball himself, but was tackled for a 14-yard loss.

A short punt later and Marshall County was given another golden opportunity from the Rocket 35. Marshall quarterback Chase Clark responded with a scoring pass to Casey White. The duo matched up for six receptions and 94 yards in the game, but their team wouldn't score again.

"We spotted them 15 points then buckled up our chin straps and got after them," Starnes said.

However, the damage was already done on the scoreboard, and there would be more tragedy in the form of wounded flesh.

Not long after Crittenden closed to within 15-7 on Dustin Hernandez's 82-yard kickoff return, the Rockets lost one of its offensive arms. The team's second-leading rusher, Grant Gardner, ran to the sideline pointing to his shoulder. He was taken to the hospital for X-rays, which proved negative for anything real serious. Yet, he played just two more downs the entire game.

"If Grant doesn't go down, I think it's a different ball game," Starnes said. "But our kids played their hearts out.

"You have to give credit to Marshall County. Their defense controlled us. They are big and aggressive, and that's about all you can say."

Gardner rushed for 41 yards on just three carries and caught a pass for 16 yards – a total of 57 yards. That was half of the total net yards Crittenden's offense provided in the game.

In the end, mistakes – including two fumbles – spelled doom for the Rockets. Starnes said the offense was out of sync most of the game, and with Gardner sidelined, it made matters worse.

Willis completed half of his 10 passes, but the Rocket QB netted just two yards in the air. He rushed for four. Hernandez finished with 65 yards on 11 carries to lead an offense stymied by the Marshals.

Still, Crittenden was in the game to the final two minutes.

"We had a chance there at the end, but couldn't capitalize," Starnes said.

Crittenden's defense, which played extraordinarily well the entire game, stopped Marshall on downs at the Rocket 32 with 3:13 to play. Hernandez ran 13 yards for a first down. A play later, Willis was sacked and fumbled with 2:15 to go. From there, Marshall ran out the clock using running back Nathan Anderson to carry the ball time after time.

Anderson had 25 yards at the half, but finished with 89. He carried the ball 19 times the last half as the Marshals ground it out in the fourth period. Marshall finished with 16 first downs, nine the second half. Crittenden had just five the entire game.

Crittenden, 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the district, plays at Class 2A district opponent Murray next week.

Rockets selling Pink Out shirts

Crittenden County High School football players and boosters are selling 2011 Pink Out shirts in preparation of its game on Oct. 21 against Caldwell County.

As part of a statewide effort – being orchestrated by Coach Al Starnes – the Rockets and more than 90 schools across the state will be hosting Pink Out football games to help raise awareness for Breast Cancer Research. The theme is Tackling for a Cure.

During the football game on Oct. 21 at Rocket Stadium, there will be a memorial list read over the public address system and survivors will be recognized on the field at halftime.

The Rockets are asking everyone to wear pink during the Oct. 21 game. Players' uniforms will punctuated with pink accessories. Shirts are being sold for $10 to $12 each. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Rockets post first district victory in 2A

MARION, Ky. – A bumpy road got a little smoother for the Rockets Friday as Crittenden County employed a rigid running attack and aggressive defense to pull off a 34-0 homecoming victory over Reidland.

After a schedule that included some lumps and bruises to the Rocket record and its psyche, Crittenden County found its mojo in the first Class 2A District game of the season. Senior running back Dustin Hernandez rushed for two touchdowns and 147 yards.

"We got a lot our players back and had home field advantage," said Hernandez. "This feels more like Crittenden County football. The Rockets are coming back!"

After more than seven scoreless quarters and three straight losses, Crittenden finally got its swagger back on offense as Hernandez and Grant Gardner combined for 124 yards on the ground during the first half. Both scored to give the Rockets a 12-0 halftime lead.

But out of the chute, the Rockets still looked a little shell-shocked from losing its last two games by a combined total of 90-16. On its first series, Crittenden was whistled for lining up wrong on a short third-down play. Two snaps later they turned the ball over on downs. On the next series, three straight illegal procedures penalties forced Crittenden to punt.

After that, the tough, early schedule began to show dividends. The Rockets took control of Reidland – the weakest team it's faced since the opening game – and scored twice in the second period. The second half, wasn't even a contest. The Rockets poured it on with a chiseling defense, pinning the Greyhounds' ground game to a net-zero yards the last two periods. And, Crittenden wasn't whistled for another infraction after the first period.

Reidland's two-prong attack featuring Colin Spink and Craig Johnson lacked much creativity, and the Rockets made them pay. Despite some nice runs by the two backs, Crittenden set the tempo and sacked the Greyhound quarterback five times. Devin Clark and Stephon Cozart had two apiece.

"We dominated them up front," Rocket coach Al Starnes said after picking up his eighth win in nine tries against Reidland. "We got a taste of victory and we needed that. Now, we just need to get all of our kids back."

The Rockets, who have been hobbled by injuries and other personnel issues during the early part of the season, had nine players in street clothes for this game, including starters Devin Wallace and Clint Asbridge. Both should be back next week when 6A Marshall County comes to Marion.

For Rocket quarterback Bryce Willis, who threw for just six yards by completing one of three passes, the win was what mattered. He rushed for 24 yards on five carries, including one touchdown. On defense, he intercepted a pass and returned it 75 yards for a TD.

"We'd been kind of down the past couple of weeks, but we played hyped and energized tonight," he said. "This first district win is what really matters. This got us into the playoffs."

Indeed, it may have. In the new five-team Class 2A First District, Crittenden is now 1-0 and should make the post-season based on this early victory. The other teams in the district are Caldwell County, Ballard Memorial and Murray, none of whom the Rockets have played yet.

Starnes praised the play of Clark and other linemen like Eli Bebout and Korey Mayes.

"We had several kids step up tonight and that's what we have to have," the coach said.

He also pointed to the play of kicker Micah Hollamon who had a touchdown-saving tackle late in the game and recovered a squib kick that bounced off a Reidland player.

Rockets fall 49-0 at Paducah Tilghman

PADUCAH, Ky. – Paducah Tilghman had the ball eight times on offense and scored every series. In a somewhat fortuitous twist for the visiting Rockets, penalties negated two of those touchdowns, limiting the Tornado victory to 49-0 Friday at McRight Field.

Tilghman's defense scored once. The Tornado is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A.

Tilghman's J.D. Harmon – recruited by several colleges including Kentucky, Louisville and Ole Miss – had just five touches on offense. He made each one count, scoring on two – a 48-yard touchdown run and a 31-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Presnell. Harmon's other three catches went for first downs. The 6-foot-3 senior also intercepted two passes, including one for a touchdown return in the second half. His other pick squelched Crittenden's only scoring opportunity at the end of the half. Harmon grabbed that one in the end zone for a touchback.

Fittingly, Harmon was also crowned Tilghman's homecoming king during a halftime ceremony.

"We were just outclassed," Rocket coach Al Starnes said. "They got the ball to Harmon and he's amazing."

For the Rockets, now 1-3, it was a chance to improve its play against a top-ranked team despite a half dozen key players being out for various reasons, including grades and injuries. Most will be back next week when Crittenden opens play in its new Class 2A First District at home against Reidland.

With Rocket starting QB Bryce Willis out with a concussion, backup sophomore Travis Gilbert turned in a gutsy performance, completing nearly half of his 22 passes for 106 yards. Grant Gardner caught three balls for 31 yards, but the offensive highlights were in short supply. One courageous play came on the first series for Crittenden when punter Dustin Hernandez audibled to a fake, took off running, spun off a would-be tackler and picked up the first down from deep in Rocket territory.

While Tilghman's speed-laden offense scored six times, its defense was just as impressive. It forced two turnovers and stymied Crittenden's ground game. The Rockets rushed for just 43 yards, averaging only 1.3 yards per carry.

"Tilghman has great athletes," Starnes said. "We had a couple of drives that we were pleased with, but we just couldn't capitalize."

Trailing by 21 late in the first half, Crittenden went from its own 34 to deep in Tilghman territory. The Rockets tried two passes into the end zone in the final seconds, but the second was picked off by Harmon when he out-jumped Hernandez for the interception.

"We've played this tougher schedule to get ready for the district," the Rocket coach said. "Now, we''ll see if it pays off."

Next week will be Crittenden's homecoming against the Greyhound, who are coached by former Murray High running back Jon Hedges.

The next field goal by Micah Hollamon will give him the record

for most field goals in a career, 4.

Since 2001, CC has scored fewer points in its first three games

only once which was in 2007 when we only scored 13 points.

The Rockets have scored 64 points this season.

The Rockets gave up 230 yards rushing and 260 yards passing

last week. Since 1996, only one other time has a Rocket team

given up at least 200 yards rushing AND passing in the same

game. The other game was the 2007 regular season match up

with Mayfield when the Cardinals rushed for 239 yards and passed

for 217 yards.

The last time the Rockets had their leading rusher in 2 of their first

three games have at least 160 yards rushing was in 1997 when

David Beverly rushed for 187 yards against Heath in the season

opener and 215 yards against Fulton City in week 2. This year

in week 1 Dustin Hernandez rushed for 179 yards and last week

against Union County Grant Gardner tallied 185 yards, both were

career highs.

CC had 18 first downs last week which was the most by a CC

team since week 1 of the 2008 season versus Lake County (TN)

when the Rockets had 19.

CC has been outscored 15-48 in the second half this season.

Union exploits wounded Rockets in 41-16 win

MORGANFIELD, Ky. – By the end of Friday's game at Union County, Rocket football fans needed a team roster to identify the players with fairly clean uniforms who were all over the field – and it wasn't because of a runaway victory.

Rocket RB Grant Gardner didn't get this facemask call, but he
finished with a career-high rushing with 185 yards.

On the contrary, Union turned a four-point halftime lead into a second half route, beating the wounded Rockets 41-16.

In-game injuries and pre-game personnel issues left Crittenden with the insurmountable task of trying to contain Union's extraordinary speed with a cast of characters even the die-hard Rocket fan couldn't have named without a program. Two-way starter Bryce Willis (QB, DB) went down in the first half. Two-way starter Clint Asbridge (WR, DB) took a blind-side block while trying to make an open-field tackle early in the game and finished it on the sideline. Jamie Atwell was thrown into starting action because three other regulars were unavailable for the contest due to injuries, academics and other disciplinary measures. Atwell was knocked out, too.

"With the numbers we have to start with, when we can't get our personnel out there, it takes away all of our timing and chemistry," said Rocket coach Al Starnes. "In the second half we were scrambling just to find guys to put in there."

Dustin Hernandez, the Rockets top offensive player, and Devin Wallace, maybe the best defensive player through the first two games, were both ineligible to play. Additionally, backup lineman Daniel Price was out, and running back Bowe Wallace watched his third straight game from the sideline because of a back injury.

"It's really ironic because we thought we had depth this year at the skilled positions," Starnes said. "Now, that's the area where we're hurting. We've been put in a position where we're just trying to survive games instead of win them."

With third-string players in the secondary, Crittenden was vulnerable to the pass against Union's senior quarterback Kren Rister. A heady player and great athlete, Rister exploited the patchwork defense with surgical skill, throwing two touchdown passes and rolling up 260 yards through the air. But that wasn't the only chink in the armor of a generally stringy Rocket defense. The Braves rambled for 279 yards on the ground – including big runs of 79 yards by Rister for a TD and Darwin Mobley's 56-yarder to set up a crucial third-quarter Union touchdown.

Trailing 14-10 at the break, Crittenden was holding its own despite being shorthanded from the outset. By then, three more starters were down and Union knew it. The Braves went for the jugular, turning to the fastest guy on the team, who hadn't touched the ball up to that point. Mobley, mostly used for returning kicks, got the toss on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. He almost took it to the house, stopped only by a touchdown-saving tackle at the 15 by Wes Evers. Four plays later, Rister threw a fourth-and-four pass into the end zone for Conner Wempe. The touchdown cut deep into the Rocket psyche.

"We saw they were over adjusting to our trips (receivers) so we wanted to get the fastest guy on our team one-on-one with somebody and it worked," Union coach Steve Carter said about Mobley's big run. "That really gave us the momentum we were looking for."

From there, Union scored on three of its next four possessions, going largely to senior receiver Jake Risinger when the Braves needed a big catch. Two of their last three TDs were passes of 33 and 34 yards to Risinger. The Braves played without one of its stars, too. Running back Jerrell Foster, suffering from shin splints, never carried the ball, but got in on one play.

"They really wore us out with their speed," Starnes said.

One bright spot for the Rockets was the offensive performance by junior running back Grant Gardner. He posted a career-high 185 yards on 19 carries and took some vicious licks while doing so.

For the Rockets, the road ahead is perhaps even tougher. Crittenden goes to Paducah Tilghman next week to take on the fifth-ranked team in Class 3A.

"We have to get ready for Tilghman so this isn't going to get any easier," Starnes said, pointing out that the Tornado has similar speed, if not more than Union County. However, Tilghman, coming off tough games against Mayfield and Graves County, have injuries of their own. The Tornado (2-2) lost to Mayfield and beat Graves by one. They had a handful of starters on the shelf Friday in the 22-21 victory over Graves.

"We have to concentrate on improving our technique and if we do that every week, we're going to be okay," the 21-year Rocket coach said.

Counting up all of the casualties after three games, Crittenden has lost eight players who figured into either starting or second-team roles, most of them on both sides of the ball. The Rockets hope to get a player or two back in the coming days though, as they prepare for the last non-district game before turning attention to the first league matchup with Reidland on Sept. 23.

Trigg outruns Rockets in red-eye bowl

CADIZ, Ky. – Trigg County's senior running back Hakeem Taylor caught two long touchdown passes to cap a 22-10 victory over the Rockets in the red-eye nightcap of Toyota David Sadler Bowl Friday at Cadiz.

The opening kickoff was at 9:22 p.m., and it finished 30 minutes before midnight. The first game of the doubleheader was delayed more than an hour due to heat. Greenwood beat Hopkinsville 63-13 in the opener.

Trigg's Tyler was named the game's MVP after he caught two passes for 144 yards and rushed for 51 in the come-from-behind victory. Trigg County's speed and stamina was the difference.

Wildcat quarterback Luke McKenzie threw three touchdown passes, including a rollout nine-yard strike to Quinten Bird with just over two minutes to play, putting the game out of reach for the Rockets (1-1).

Trigg (3-0), ranked 10th in Class 3A by the Associated Press, scored on its first possession thanks to a 54-yard reception and run by Tyler. However, the host Wildcats trailed 10-7 at the half.

Crittenden's Grant Gardner scored on a three-yard run midway through the second period. The Rockets got good field possession on its next series after forcing a punt. Then, Micah Hollamon put Crittenden ahead with a 24-yard field goal.

Critttenden operates out of multiple sets, but generally lines up in the spread offense. Against Trigg, though, the Rockets went largely to the I-formation late in the first half and began to find success running the ball behind its front line. The strategy unraveled in the second half as Trigg, with a deeper roster, wore down the two-way Rocket starters.

"Trigg got after us in the second half," Rocket coach Al Starnes said. "I really thought it was going to be the other way around, but we were dragging. We got tired."

Trigg took the lead for good on a McKenzie sprint-out pass to Tyler in the left flat. After catching the ball, the senior running back broke free and cut across the field 90 yards for six points late in the third. The Wildcats threatened again on their ensuing series, but Crittenden's Gardner intercepted a pass in the end zone for a touchback with just over six minutes to play.

Three incomplete passes later, trailing by four, the Rockets went for fourth-and-10 from their own 20 and failed on another pass that was almost picked off.

"I thought it was our only shot at that point," Starnes said about foregoing a punt in that situation with 6:17 to go.

The Rockets had just one timeout at that juncture.

Trigg scored shortly thereafter on Bird's only catch of the game, but not before a valiant effort by the Rocket defense almost stopped the Wildcats on downs at the 10.

Crittenden and Trigg – district opponents in most other sports – hadn't met on the gridiron since 2000. The teams have now split their last 12 meetings dating back into the 1990s.

"We never quit, we just made a lot of mistakes," Starnes said. "It's not going to get any easier, so we have to get better."

The Rockets play on the road at Union County and at second-ranked Class 3A Tilghman over the next two weeks.

Games at tonight's Toyota Bowl at Trigg County have been delayed at least one hour due to heat.

The Hopkinsville vs. Greenweel game was set to begin at 5:30. Kickoff is now set for no sooner than 6:30.

Crittenden vs. Trigg will begin afterwards, probably somewhere around 9 p.m., or later.

6 points were the fewest points allowed in week 1 since 1988 (6 pts. vs. McLean Co.)
6 points have been given up in week 1 three times (2011, 1988, 1963).
The only time fewer points were surrendered in a season opener was in 1984 against McLean County when the Rockets recorded a shutout (29-0).

Caldwell pulls away late in Warrior Bowl 2

Caldwell County's freshman tandem of QB Elijah Sindelar and running back Jaylen Boyd was too much for Union County in game two of the National Guard Warrior Bowl Saturday night at Rocket Stadium.

Sindelar, a 6-4, 175-pounder with a good arm, stretched Union County's secondary and Boyd broke loose on some big runs to help Caldwell post a 34-12 victory. Boyd was the game's MVP.

The game was close until the fourth period when Caldwell pulled away thanks partly to an interception return by senior defensive end Jake Jones. Union was within 8 with 10 minutes to play.

First-game mistakes hurt Union County, but Caldwell looked sharp coming off an incredible 80-62 win last week over Calloway County. Union had a couple of delay of game penalties and an infraction for illegal participation. The Braves also had trouble with players cramping.

Meanwhile, Caldwell proved it has plenty of weapons to contend for the Class 2A First District title. Union County plays in the Class 2A Second District. Both are in the First Region along with Crittenden County, which is new to 2A this season. Crittenden is in the district with Caldwell County.

Receiver Jake Risinger and running back Jerrell Foster give Union County some lethal weapons as well. Crittenden plays Union County in two weeks at Morganfield. By then, the Braves will likely have many of those mistakes ironed out.

Rockets dominate Hopkins Central 38-6 in opener

For its 2011 debut, Crittenden County's football team turned in a custom-ordered job for coach Al Starnes' start of his 21st season. The Rockets dominated Hopkins Central 38-6, shutting out the Storm until the last second of the National Guard Warrior Bowl in Marion.

A stellar defensive effort will not go unrewarded, but that coveted zero on the opposing side of the scoreboard disappeared on the last play of the contest when Hopkins Central erased the goose egg with a touchdown pass against the third-team defense.

Otherwise, it was a factory-ordered opening game power-play for the Rockets. Crittenden's offense scored on three of its first four possessions and the defense forced four turnovers that led to 17 points.

"The kids played hard. Our defense got after them and I think we controlled the game up front," said Starnes. "We still have some things we have to work on, but for the first game, I think we played hard."

Senior defensive end Devin Wallace had a big game, recording six solo tackles and three sacks. He also caused a fumble and recovered it.

In his first game as the featured running back, senior Dustin Hernandez scored two touchdowns and ran 179 yards on 14 carries. He showed a stirring burst of speed on a 50-yard score in the second period, outrunning the entire Storm defense.

Hernandez was named MVP of the Warrior Bowl's opening game. Caldwell County beat Union County in the second bowl game on Saturday.

Junior linebacker Grant Gardner illustrated why the coaching staff has been especially high on his play throughout the preseason. He returned a fumble for a touchdown and grabbed an errant punt and raced 20 yards to the end zone with it.

"He has a nose for the football and he's always going to be around it," Starnes said. "Grant was a bright spot."

Hernandez, who plays cornerback on defense, intercepted a pass, and the defensive unit threw Hopkins Central for a loss or no gain on a dozen plays. The Storm had just one running play from scrimmage longer than 10 yards.

After leading 35-0 at the half, Crittenden used nearly everyone on the roster to finish up the victory. Backup quarterback Travis Gilbert got in on the action even earlier. He spelled starter Bryce Willis in the second period after Crittenden was up three touchdowns.

Rocket defensive back and running back Bowe Wallace did not play and will be out for at least 30 days with a back injury. The junior will be re-evaluated in a month.

It was the first game of the season for both teams. Crittenden is playing up a division this year in Class 2A while the Storm plays in Class 4A. The Rockets have defeated Hopkins Central three straight seasons in either the first or second game on the schedule. It's the only times the teams have met during the regular season.

Rockets rewarded in pre-season scrimmage

In its only scheduled scrimmage of the preseason, Crittenden County got a rewarding warmup at Muhlenberg County Friday night, winning in action against two teams.

The Rocket defense was remarkable at times and the offense outscored Muhlenberg and Logan counties a combined five touchdowns to none.

The defense recorded a sack, scored once and recovered a fumble to set up another TD.

"The defense is no doubt ahead of the offense," said Rocket coach Al Starnes, staring his 21st season. "For our first scrimmage we played okay, but we're never satisfied. I saw plenty of things we need to work on. We had some mistakes and some penalties."

The three teams participating in the pre-season workout took turns playing offense in a controlled-type scrimmage with each squad getting 10 offensive plays and 10 defensive plays against one another. During that portion, Crittenden outscored Muhlenberg 6-0 and battled to a scoreless draw against Logan County, which had the more competitive team of the two opponents. Crittenden scored on its 10th offensive play against Muhlenberg as tailback Dustin Hernandez ran for a TD on a double handoff.

Against Logan in the scripted portion of the scrimmage, Crittenden got a couple of positive-yard running plays from Hernandez and quarterback Bryce Willis completed a 15-yard pass to Clint Asbridge. Otherwise, the offense sputtered a bit. The defense remained tough, however, holding Logan to 23 yards.

Crittenden mixed up its offensive sets in the 10-play series portions of the scrimmage, running out of the Wing-T, I-Formation and Spread. Several players worked into the rotation. Starnes said getting depth on the line is key to a successful season.

"We have some playmakers if we can the ball in their hands," he said. "But the key will be getting help up front. We have to get some of these non-starters ready to play because with our schedule, we're going to have four hard quarters of football every Friday night. There aren't going to be any blowouts where we can rest people."

Because of that, Starnes said conditioning is a concern at this point. However, it's still early. The team will not scrimmage again in the preseason. The Rockets open at home Aug. 26 in the National Guard Warrior Bowl against Central Hopkins.

In the final segment of Friday's scrimmage at Greenville, Crittenden lined up first against host Muhlenberg with 15 minutes on a running clock. The Rockets scored on its third play from scrimmage, a 66-yard pass from Willis to receiver Grant Gardner. Micah Hollamon kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

From his safety position, Asbridge picked off his second pass of the night. This one he returned 35 yards for a TD. The extra point attempt was partially blocked, giving Crittenden a 13-0 advantage.

Muhlenberg fumbled on its ensuing possession and it was recovered by defensive end Devin Clark. The Rockets scored two plays later on a 21-yard Hernandez run. With Hollamon's kick, Crittenden won the period 20-0.

The Rockets finished with 114 yards of offense against Muhlenberg, including 90 in the air. Willis was 2-for-3 and backup QB Travis Gilbert was 1-1. Newcomer Austin Piper caught a pass and so did fullback Brenden Phillips.

In the nightcap, Crittenden beat Logan County 7-0 after 15 minutes of play. The Rockets rushed for 41 yards and passed for 46 during that period. Logan was held to just five yards total offense.

Crittenden scored its only TD against Logan on a four-yard run by Hernandez, capping a seven-play, 75-yard drive. The big play on that series was 40-yard pass from Willis to tight end Bobby Knox.

"I liked our intensity," Starnes said. "I think we're starting to mesh as a team."

Rockets scrimmage Friday at Muhlenburg

The Rocket football team will scrimmage starting at 7:15 p.m., Friday at Muhlenberg South Middle School's campus. Crittenden will be among three teams participating in the controlled scrimmage. The Rockets open against Muhlenberg County then play Logan County at 8:30 p.m. The team's regular season starts Aug. 26 at home in the National Guard Warrior Bowl against Hopkins Central.

Rocket conditioning is part of every pre-season workout

Due to excessive heat, Crittenden County football's pre-season camp schedule has been altered this week. Instead of the customary three-a-day practice sessions, the team has been working out from 8 to 11 a.m., and then from 8 to 10 p.m. The KHSAA and school policy does not allow outdoor games or practices when the heat index reaches a certain level.

Those two-a-day practices will continue this week and culminate in a Blue and White Intra-Squad Scrimmage Game at 8 p.m., Friday at Rocket Stadium. Admission is canned goods which will be donated to the Crittenden County Food Bank.

The Rockets only other preseason play will be a dual scrimmage at Muhlenberg South Middle School Field on Friday, Aug. 12. Crittenden will play Muhlenberg County at 7:15 p.m., and Logan County at 8:30 p.m. These will be controlled scrimmages with 10 plays on offense and 10 plans on defense.

The Rocket regular season opener is Friday, Aug. 26 against Hopkins Central in the National Guard Warrior Bowl at Rocket Stadium.

Camp week starts Monday in Rocketland

Pre-season workouts are well underway. The Rockets have worked out in helmets and shorts all this week for three hours each morning. Camp week with full pads starts Monday.

ROCKET YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP

Ages 6-15 – Cost $30 – 8:30-11:30 AM

July 11-13, 2011 – Rocket Arena

Instruction in all areas of football by the Crittenden County Rocket Football staff. A punt, pass and kick competition will be held. Flag football games will be conducted at the end of each day. A T-shirt will be given to each camper. Family discounts available for more than one camper.

Registration forms will be accepted the first day of camp starting at 8:00 AM. You may pre-register by picking up forms from the Crittenden Press or NAPA Auto Parts. Return completed forms to football coach Al Starnes at the Board of Education office.
