Rockets railroad Lake County

DRAFFENVILLE, Ky. - Crittenden County rode the red-eye train to an impressive season-opening victory 54-21 over Lake County, Tenn., Friday night in the second game of a doubleheader in the Purchase Area Alliance Bowl.

The game started after 9 p.m., and wasn't over until a quarter to midnight. Host Marshall County easily beat Heath in the opening game.

The late hours didn't slow the Rocket railroad job. Running back Rodney Robertson scored five touchdowns and rushed for 258 yards to lead the onslaught. Quarterback J.D. Gray rushed for 109 yards and fullback Gaige Courtney scored twice.

Crittenden got some very impressive defensive play against a potent Lake County team. The Rockets limited the Falcons to fewer than 100 yards and only three first downs until the reserves went in late in the contest and Lake went down the field for two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

After a game-opening interception on a halfback pass by Tanner Nix failed to catch Lake County off guard, Crittenden turned to the more reliable running game and flattened their west Tennessee Class A counterparts. The Rockets scored on their next eight possessions and got an early safety when defensive end Dylan Clark tackled the Falcon QB in the end zone.

Clark kept the defense cracking all night, forcing two turnovers and four punts from the Lake County offense, which had reeled off 35 points the week before in a season-opening win against Trenton (Tenn.) Peabody.

"We got after them tonight," Rocket coach Al Starnes said, pointing to a defense that registered at least a half dozen jaw-dropping tackles and consistently pinned down the Falcons. Crittenden posted 10 tackles for loss during the contest. Lake County rushed for only 25 yards.

While Clark, Aaron Berry, Gaige Courtney, Robertson and Terry Werne were heading the defensive pinch, Crittenden's rushing game was stealing the show. The Rockets gained 440 yards on the ground as QB Gray handed off 50 times and completed just one of four passes.

Season opener at a glance

WEEK ONE GAME NOTES:
Pennyrile Alliance Bowl
at Marshall County High School
ROCKETS VS. LAKE COUNTY (Tenn.)
Kickoff at 8 p.m.

CRITTENDEN COUNTY (0-0)
Offense: Multiple
Defense: 50
Player Report: Injuries: Rodney Robertson (hand) will play; Jacob Long (ankle) will play.
Notes: Gaige Courtney needs just 77 tackles this season to become the all-time leading tackler in school history. The record is currently 287 and held by Wompie Stewart. Rodney Robertson needs one touchdown to have the third most receiving touchdowns in school history. Also, Robertson can become the team’s fourth leading rusher all-time if he has a 1,000-yard season.

LAKE COUNTY (Tenn.) (1-0)
Offense: Multiple
Defense: 4-3
Results this season:
Beat Trenton Peabody 35-34 last week
Scouting report: The Falcons are big up front and run a multiple offense, which includes some trick plays and features senior running back Carlos Young. The team’s playmaker, Young lines up at nearly every skill position, including quarterback, flanker, tight end and running back. Coach Al Starnes says the Falcons remind him of Fulton City, but with a more “imaginative offense.”

The series: This will be their first meeting.

Other Notes: Crittenden County is 19-32 all-time in season-opening games... the Rockets are 1-5 against out-of-state teams, its only win was over Dexter, Mo., in 1992... Crittenden is 0-1 against out-of-state teams on a neutral field, losing last year to Massac County 63-0 in the Alliance Bowl at Graves County, which was the second worst loss in school history.

CCMS crushes JMMS

Crittenden County got a measure of revenge against James Madison in Tuesday's middle school football game. Brenden Phillips rushed for 228 yards and scored two of the CCMS Rockets' three first-quarter touchdowns as Crittenden beat the Madisonville team 20-0.

James Madison had defeated the Rockets 6-0 in a scrimmage last week and beat the Rockets 54-0 last season.

The CCMS team is 1-0.

Round the horn

Paducah Sun sports writer Joey Fosko has several leftover items he's sharing regarding Class A football in his blog today.

Check it out at Fosko's Clubhouse.

Fosko wrote the Class A First District preview which the Sun published today. He's also been following football in western Kentucky for more than 20 years.

One point he makes is that the new (old) playoff system is back and will mean some long road trips for Class A teams.

Rockets lose scrimmage

Hopkins Central 52, Crittenden 13
Scrimmage Game: Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 at Nortonville

The Rockets scored on their first possession of the scrimmage, then went to sleep.

Hopkins Central scored virtually every time it had the ball and jumped out to a 46-6 margin at the half.

Crittenden's defense was porous and the offense was badly beaten at the line of scrimmage.

The varsity Rockets scored just once. The reserves scored late in the game for Crittenden.

Scrimmage change possible

Due to heavy rains at Hopkins Central today, this evening's scrimmage game between the Tomcats and Rockets may be played on the team's practice field rather than in the football stadium. There is a possibility the scrimmage could be played at the Hopkins County Middle School field, which is right off the Western Kentucky Parkway. It's the old high school field.

The preseason game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Countdown to Gridiron Glory feature

Rocket football fans can listen to a Podcast about the upcoming Crittenden County season at WPSD-TV's Countdown to Gridiron Glory Web site. The audio file is of The Crittenden Press's Chris Evans talking with WPSD's Edward Egros about the upcoming season.

Laker injury woes

Crittenden County plays at Calloway County in Week Three. The Lakers are one of the best teams in the area, but injuries are causing a problem for them right. Quartertback Casey Brockman is among those hurting (broken bone in non-throwing hand) and may miss the season opener next week.

Rockets scrimmage Muhlenberg South

Crittenden County opened its preseason schedule Friday in a controlled scrimmage against Muhlenberg South. The Rocket varsity outscored South 3-2.

Muhlenberg South ran an option offense and Crittenden's defense was out of position or a step behind on several plays.

Offensively, the Rockets looked very good at times with J.D. Gray triggering an attack that is capable of applying a variety of pressure on opposing teams. Short screen passes and hard-nosed running will be the primary weapons based on what Crittenden showed in its opening scrimmage.

The Rockets play their final preseason game next Thursday at Hopkins Central.

TK Guess at Campbellsville

Former Rocket football player T.K. Guess is in preseason camp at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky.

Although the team has not released its 2008 roster, we talked with Guess last week and he was preparing for the start of workouts Friday. At Campbellsville, Guess joins former Crittenden County QB Sean Thompson, who is senior wide receiver. Another former Rocket, Jacob Courtney, was playing at Campbellsville last year, but is not returning this fall.

Guess, 20, graduated from Crittenden in 2006 and was widely considered a top prospect coming out of high school. He went to Western Kentucky University and joined the Hilltoppers, but dropped out of school in less than a year.

Guess says he has a new outlook and plans on sticking with football at Campbellsville. He is projected as a defensive back. At Crittenden, Guess holds several school records, including those for receiving and interceptions.

Pictured is Guess wearing his familiar No. 14 while playing for the Rockets.

Lake County first opponent

Crittenden County has a couple of scrimmage games coming up in the next two weeks as the Rockets prepare for the regular-season opener against Lake County, Tenn., in the Alliance Bowl, Aug. 29 at Marshall County High School. Crittenden will play the second game of a doubleheader starting at 8 p.m.

Lake County was 5-5 last season. Crittenden was 4-6 in the regular season in 2007. The teams had one common opponent, Fulton County. Lake County beat Fulton 30-8. Crittenden beat Fulton County comparably, 40-12.

Of Lake's wins last year, three were against very small west Tennessee teams: Gleason, West Carroll and South Fulton.

Lake is the smallest county in Tennessee. It borders the Mississippi River and Reelfoot Lake. Lake County was once a powerhouse in Tennessee Class A football, but in recent years it has not been nearly as formidable.
