Rocket miscues let Bombers score 55

Rockets Travis Fitzgerald, Gavin Dickerson and
Adam Beavers stop Ballard's Devyn Bledsoe.
LA CENTER, Ky. – After taking a 21-14 lead in the second period, Crittenden County started shooting itself in the foot – in rapid-fire succession.

When the smoke had cleared, Ballard Memorial had scored six unanswered touchdowns and pummeled the Rockets 55-21.

“I am concerned,” Rocket coach Al Starnes told his team on the field after the game. “If we play like we did tonight, we will not go very far in the playoffs. That was not us. We cannot make those type mistakes and win.”

Crittenden’s woes started when it failed to convert three Ballard turnovers into anything that would stick to the scoreboard. The Rockets came up empty three times in the red zone, turning the ball over on downs and throwing two interceptions. It's punts were short and the offense failed to move the chains when it counted.

And that wasn’t all. Ballard took a fumbled kickoff return in for a touchdown then blocked a punt and got six points on a scoop and score. It was the second straight week Crittenden had allowed two TDs on special teams.

Crittenden ends the regular season 6-4 overall, its first winning season in five years. The Rockets host Caverna (2-8) in next week’s Class A playoffs.
