Rockets win fifth straight to close regular season

MORTON’S GAP – Crittenden County finished the regular season on a roll Friday night, screaming past Hopkins County Central 56-21 for its fifth straight victory.

Eli Lovell (24) had two fumble recoveries
in the game, one for a TD.

The Rockets (7-5) exploded for 42 points in the first half behind senior quarterback Quinn Summers, who accounted for six touchdowns – three rushing and three passing – before the break. Crittenden led 42-21 at halftime and never looked back, holding the Storm scoreless the rest of the way.

Summers ran for 48 yards and three scores on five carries while completing 13-of-21 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Caden Howard caught four passes for 115 yards, including a 75-yard strike late in the second quarter. Eli Lovell added two touchdown plays – a 3-yard reception and a fumble recovery in the end zone. The sophomore had two fumble recoveries overall.

Defensively, Joel Bumpus, Davis Perryman and Trae Taylor each had interceptions as the Rockets forced five turnovers. Bumpus also rushed for a short touchdown in the third quarter. The defense clamped down after a back-and-forth second quarter that featured three touchdowns scored on three consecutive plays from scrimmage.

Caden Howard (0) had 115 yds receiving

Crittenden dominated statistically, out-gaining Hopkins Central 384 to 151 in total yards. The Rockets had 16 first downs to the Storm’s six and CCHS allowed their hosts only one after halftime.

Taylor led Crittenden’s ground game with 66 yards on five carries. Lovell finished with five catches for 55 yards, and Perryman added a 25-yard touchdown grab.

There was only one successful punt in the entire game. That one by Hopkins Central, but the Storm tried on another occasion, but the punter mishandled a snap and Lovell pounced on the ball in the end zone.

Crittenden now turns its attention to the postseason. The Class 2A First District No. 2 seed Rockets open at home next Friday against McLean County, the third seed out of the Second District.
