Jr Pro Rockets undefeated, win in final seconds

QB Quinn Summers
Crittenden County's Junior Pro fifth- and sixth-grade football remains undefeated after beating Union County 8-0 Saturday night at Morganfield in a showdown between the two best teams in the league.

Crittenden quarterback Quinn Summers scored with nine seconds left to cap a two-minute, 80-yard drive that ended with his touchdown.

The young Rockets are 5-0 this season. It was Union County's first loss.

Rocket offense conspicuously absent in 14-0 loss

Union RB Matthias Ervin is caught by Rockets
Preston Turley and Tyler Boone.
MORGANFIELD, Ky. – Take your pick: Interceptions, penalties, mental mistakes. The list could go on.

Any number of offensive faux pas could be held responsible for the No. 8 Rockets’ misfire at Union County Friday on a night when its defense played well enough to win against a bruising Braves’ rushing attack.

Despite forcing Union County into three fumbles, and Crittenden getting a couple of good kick returns from Preston Morgeson and Xander Tabor, to set up manageable field position a handful of times, the Rocket offense was as cold as a Siberian field mouse.

Union County scored in the second and fourth quarters to win the game 14-0. It was the first time in 38 games that Crittenden has been shut out.

“Offensively we couldn’t get it going,” said CCHS coach Sean Thompson. “Any time we got down the field into good position we made a mistake – mental mistakes from the opening horn to the end.”

Crittenden County hasn't come back to win after trailing at the half since 2006.

Rocket quarterback Hunter Jones threw four interceptions. He completed nine passes for just 38 yards and the running game mustered only 100 yards.

Although the Rockets were whistled for just three penalties, each of them were drive-killers. A personal foul in the first period and holding calls in the second and fourth quarters helped Union stop the Rockets dead in their tracks.

“To beat good teams you can’t do that,” Thompson said. “We have to go back and try to get better and make sure the kids know what to do on every play. We’re too far into the season to be making the mistakes we’re making right now.”

The Rockets were hit with a double-whammy from the Union County backfield. Big running back Matthias Ervin – listed at 5-10, 160 pounds but looks considerably larger – and Elijah Calloway combined for 241 of the Braves’ 270 total yards. Both are seniors and have filled in after Union’s top rusher Corinthian Seales-Portee broke his leg a couple of weeks ago.

Tabor rushed for 77 yards and Preston Turley caught four passes for 30 yards. Otherwise, the Rocket offense was conspicuously absent.

Noah McGowan, Caden McCalister and Turley each recovered Union County fumbles and Dylan Yates and Braxton Winders shared a sack for the defense. Crittenden hadn't lost a game after holding an opponent to 15 or fewer points since 2013.

The Rocket skipper said his team has a great deal of work to do before its hosts another 3A team, Trigg County, next week for homecoming.

2019 District 1A, District 1 Review – Week 5- Russellville UNR (0-5) – Logan County beat Russellville 55-28 two weeks ago.  Logan County led 41-7 at the half and started the running clock by scoring on the first play of the second half.  Russellville played Franklin-Simpson (1-4, 4A) this past Friday. Franklin-Simpson won 42-0.  Russellville travels to 4-0 Somerset this week (the Briar Jumpers closest game this season is 28 points).  Expect another blowout this week as Russellville will most likely have their eyes on a very important district game (and potentially their most winnable game of the season so far) with Fulton County in two weeks.
- Caverna UNR (1-4) – Caverna was destroyed again two weeks ago by Breckinridge County, 12-48.  Breckinridge is 3-2 and beat Webster County in week three, 30-20.  Todd County Central (#9 AP, 2A), now 5-0, moved through Caverna 57-27.  This is the first time Todd County Central has been 5-0 since 1974.  An interesting week 10 matchup with Todd County Central awaits the Rockets.  Caverna takes on Webster County this week.
- Fulton County #15 (4-1) – Fulton County beat Webster, 69-45, two weeks ago.  Caleb Kimble rushed for 377 yards, 4 TDs on only 18 carries.  All four TDs were of distances greater than 50 yards.  There were 11 total turnovers in the game.  Webster County’s Mason Wilson completed 20 of 44 passes for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns along with three interceptions.  At the half, Fulton County lead 29-13.  72 points combined were scored in the second half.  For reference, there were 79 points scored in the second half of the 2017 Crittenden-Ballard game that ended with a final score of 70-74.  Last week, Fulton County took on Humboldt (TN) (0-5) and won 48-12.  Humboldt has only scored 39 points the entire season.  Caleb Kimble rushed for 149 yards and 2 TDs.  Kimble now has 963 rushing yards on the season.  Fulton County takes on Greenfield (TN) in their final stop of four games played against Tennessee opponents this season.  Greenfield (TN) is undefeated at 5-0 and should win by multiple touchdowns over Fulton County.
Random Notes
During the Caldwell County game, Tyler Boone became the 19th player to have 225 career tackles.
Tyler Boone is currently tied for 14th in career tackles with Dylan Clark (235 tackles).  Next up on the career tackles list are Joey Rich (237), Tanner Tabor (239), David Beverly (247) and Dylan Smith (252).
Two weeks ago, Caldwell County scored 21 points in the first quarter.  The Rockets gave up only 19 points in the first quarter in the entire 2018 season (six to Caldwell, seven to Trigg and six to Ballard)
Prior to the Caldwell game, the last time Crittenden gave up more than 16 points in the first quarter was in 2016 versus when Russellville scored 21.

Early Tiger Punch Knocks out Rockets 36-14

Rocket RB Xander Tabor looks for running room.
MARION, Ky. – An enormous crowd showed up to see a matchup billed as a monumental clash between two Top 5 teams in the state, but it never materialized as Caldwell County turned the game into a rout in the first half.

The Tigers used great field position early to post five unanswered touchdowns before the Rockets could gather their senses.

Caldwell’s junior quarterback hadn’t shown a propensity to throw much in three previous games, but divvied it out to five different receivers in the first half, putting three TDs on the board. Russ Beshear finished 14-for-19 for 116 yards in the air with scoring strikes to running back DeEric Hollowell and receivers Tripp Branch and Tate VanHooser. Hollowell rushed for two more first-half touchdowns.

All before the Rockets had gotten their offensive legs underneath them.

Caldwell drove downfield on the opening series on 10 plays, that included four passes for the game’s first score. The Tigers tacked on two more in a hurry thanks to a short field, one courtesy of a Rocket fumble on a fake punt try on fourth down.

“Caldwell kind of punched us in mouth early, forced their will on us and made us like it. They didn’t give us time to think about what was going on. It went fast, good teams are going to do that,” Rocket coach Sean Thompson said. “We have to be able to respond.”

Rocket Tyler Boone was bottled up on this play.
The coach said his club finally found its balance just before the half, but by then it was too late.

The Rockets scored on their last possession of the second period on a 43-yard pass from quarterback Hunter Jones to receiver Preston Turley. Their final TD came on the last offensive series of the game when Tyler Boone caught a four-yard Jones' pass.

Both teams came into the contest ranked fifth in Kentucky in their respective classes, Crittenden in 1A and Caldwell in 2A. The Tigers had played much more difficult early-season schedule than Crittenden, which may have been partly responsible for the Rockets being unprepared for a game of such magnitude in the fourth week of the season.

“We came out the second half and even though it was a running clock, we won the second half. We showed some growth within the game, but we have to come out better to start games and believe we can play with good teams.”

Crittenden was also playing without Caden McCalister, a linebacker and running back, who was an all-conference player a year ago and a primary contributor this season. He had been hospitalized with a viral infection all week prior to the game and was unavailable to play. Crittenden also lost a starting member of the secondary in the first half when senior Justin Phillips went out with bruised ribs.

Crittenden will be idle next week then travel to Union County on Sept. 27.

- Russellville, UNR (0-3) – After two blowout losses, Russellville played a close one and lost 20-15 to Butler County (1-2).  The win for Butler County snapped a 23-game losing streak dating back to 2016.  Butler County went 8-4 in 2016 but did not win a game the next two seasons.  Russellville takes on intercounty rival Logan County (#8, 3A, 3-0) this week.  Logan County beat Russellville 49-7 in 2018.  Logan County has won 11 games in each of the past two seasons but were blown out in the second round of the playoffs in both seasons.  A common opponent this season between Russellville and Logan County is Warren East.  Russellville lost to Warren East 0-48 and Logan County beat Warren East 35-17.  Logan County should cruise to an easy victory.

Random Notes
  • The two special teams touchdowns last week were only the second time in school history CC had recorded that feat in a game (1987, Ballard Memorial).
  • CC is currently on a 7-game home winning streak.  The school record is 11 straight home wins from 1985-1986.
  • CC is 10-2 all-time in week 4 games when they are 3-0 to start the season.
  • CC has only started a season off with at least three road games four other times in school history (1958, 1966, 1972, 1974).  1972 is the only season the Rockets opened with four or more consecutive road games.
  • CC has scored at least 43 points in each of its first 3 games this season.  The only other time that CC team has matched that feat is in 1963.
  • CC is averaging 6.0 penalties per game this season.  That is the highest per game average since 2005 when that team average 6.8 penalties per game.
  • CC is averaging 220.3 rushing yards per game which is the highest average per game since 2009 when CC averaged 229.6 yards.
  • CC has not allowed a point to be scored in the third quarter this season.
  • CC has scored 51 points in the first quarter this year.  Since 1994, those 51 points are more than nine teams scored in the first quarter during the stretch of an entire season.
  • The 69-yard punt return for a touchdown last week was the longest punt return for a TD ever by a freshman and also set the record for the longest punt return by CC against Ballard Memorial.

Six of the 21 punt returns for touchdowns in school history have come against Ballard Memorial.
69 Yards – Preston Morgeson, 2019
63 Yards – J.D. Gray, 2008
59 Yards – Ronnie Moss, 1987
55 Yards – Denis Hodge, 1985
25 Yards – Caden McCalister, 2019
0* Yards – Steve Thompson, 1999

* Steve Thompson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.  CC won that game 7-0.

Rockets test weaponry in 50-6 win at Ballard

The defense was stifling at Ballard. Here Tyler Boone
and Justin Phillips smother a ball carrier.
LA CENTER, Ky. – For the fifth-ranked Rockets, the trip to Ballard Memorial Friday night was as much about sharpening their tools as it was about winning what most expected might be a lopsided affair.

Both boiled to fruition as Crittenden County breezed by the Bombers 50-6 in a game that featured a merciful running clock less than three minutes into the second period, and Rocket coach Sean Thompson was able perform a litmus test with some new weapons – namely sophomore receiver Brysen Baker and junior running back Eli Moss. Neither had factored into the Rockets' previous wins, but at Ballard they got some touches and didn’t disappoint.

Baker, a 6-2 receiver, caught two passes for 60 yards and nearly scored twice. His first reception went for 55 yards before he was tackled at the three-yard line to set up CCHS’s first touchdown. Another would-be TD was called back because of a penalty. Baker was a key player in middle school but sat out last season as a freshman. Moss is the fastest player on the team, but had never played football until this season. The first carry of his career went for a 14-yard touchdown as he turned the right corner and sprinted into the end zone untouched.

The usual characters filled their roles as expected. Junior Caden McCalister, figuring more predominantly in the offense with starting running back Xander Tabor sidelined, scored three times – twice on a pass and he had one of the Rockets’ two punt returns. It was the first time in team history that CCHS had returned two punts for touchdowns in one game. Both came in the first period and freshman Preston Morgeson had the longest at 69 yards.

Freshman Preston Morgeson scored twice at Ballard.
Quarterback Hunter Jones completed more passes in this game than he had the two previous combined, finishing 8-for-12 with three touchdowns. Coach Thompson said he’d have liked to have worked on the passing game a bit more, but the score got lopsided quickly partly because of the two kick returns, forcing him to change those plans.

“With those special teams touchdowns the score kind of got out of hand early and I don’t like to throw it down field when it’s like that,” the coach explained.

Crittenden will need to have all of its weaponry honed to near perfection next week as the Rockets go home for the first time this season to face Caldwell County, the third-ranked team in Class 2A. The Tigers (2-1) lost to Hopkinsville 42-14 Friday.
