Rockets take dubious path into history books

BIGGER THAN THE GAME: Crittenden County donated almost $6,000 to Shelley Boyd's
charity of choice and her husband, Carrell Boyd, conducted the post-game prayer.
Boyd is a breast cancer survivor just like coach Starnes' wife Angela.

Caldwell's Sindelar breaks all-time KY passing TD record

PRINCETON, Ky. – Barry Bonds beat Hank Aaron's home run record with a solo shot off Brewer's pitcher Chris Capuano. Aaron beat Babe Ruth's home run mark with a dinger off the Dodger's Al Downing.

Caldwell County quarterback Elijah Sindelar set the Kentucky High School career touchdown passing record against
Elijah Sindelar cocks for a pass completion downfield.
Crittenden County on October 24, 2014.

Yep, it's a dubious footnote to history, but the Rockets were there with a front-row seat. That's about all you can say about this one. Caldwell was – as anticipated – far superior. The Tiger JV squad was on the field before halftime and the clock was running continuously (mercy rule).

The senior QB Sindelar sliced away at the Rockets with mostly short passes. He threw downfield some, but it was a sideline screen to Dee Cain for 10 yards that broke the state record of 133 career TD passes, previously held by South Laurel's Ricky Bowling and more notably Leslie County's Tim Couch. Sindelar, who will be playing collegiately at Purdue in the Big 10, has started at Caldwell since he was a freshman. His statistics against Crittenden over the years have been greater than gaudy.

His numbers on this night were nothing spectacular... but his four-year body of work will be widely acclaimed across the commonwealth. After all, one of the guys he surpassed with this record was an NFL No. 1 draft pick. Now that Sindelar has the 134 TD passing record, his sights are set on surpassing Couch, who is next at No. 3 on the all-time passing yardage list.

Caldwell scored 35 unanswered points in the first period. As far as anyone knows, it was the most points Crittenden has given up in a single quarter, ever. The defense scored twice on interception and fumble returns and the punt team tacked on another in the first half.

The Rockets did get on the scoreboard at the end of the contest when third-team tailback Charlie Johnson broke an 81-yard touchdown run.
