- Nick Castiller had his 11th, 100+ yard passing game of the season which breaks the single season record held by Austin Berry (10, 2004).

- This season, five Rocket receivers had 250 or more yards receiving.  Never before had there been more than two receivers record the feat in the same season.

PLAYOFF: Bethlehem overruns Rockets 48-21

Crittenden coach Al Starnes and his boys celebrated
some early success, but the ending was brutal.
BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Bethlehem's powerful running game was more than the Rockets could overcome Friday on the road in a regional quarterfinal as the Eagles rushed for 482 yards and won the Class A playoff game 48-21.

The Eagles didn’t start out clobbering the Rockets. Crittenden actually scored first on a Dylan Hollis touchdown shortly after recovering a Bethlehem fumble in the first period.

From there, the first signs of their powerful running game started to emerge. The one-two punch of a junior tandem – quarterback Matthew Hagan and running back Hunter Downs – began stinging the Rocket defense. They each scored to close out the first period, but Crittenden answered their host’s final touchdown of the half with a 92-yard kickoff return by senior Alex Cosby.

The Rockets had a great chance to steal the momentum as the second half kicked off. Their offense moved the ball with authority, pounding it down to the Eagle 12-yard line before stalling. That missed opportunity in the red zone cost the Rockets dearly.

“If we capitalize right there it could have been different,” Rocket coach Al Starnes said. “We always say the first five minutes of the second half will make the difference. If we score there, we might have grabbed the momentum and some other things might have gone our way.”

Instead, the Rockets gave up three unanswered touchdowns thanks to Bethlehem’s two-headed rushing monster. Hagan finished with 216 yards on the ground and Downs was right behind him with 214.

The Eagles swarm RB Dylan Hollis.
“Make no mistake,” Starnes added, “Bethlehem is a very good football team. They have a big line and they dominated us up front both ways.”

Crittenden had manufactured some of its luck early with a couple of key fourth-down conversions to keep drives alive, but in the last half Bethlehem’s relentless running attack had the Rockets on their heels.

For senior quarterback Nick Castiller, it was a frustrating night, but he did find some personal achievement. Castiller had just 45 yards passing in the first half, but managed to finish with 195 as Crittenden went to the air regularly in catch-up mode down the stretch. The formula allowed Castiller to move into second place in all-time passing yards. His career ends with 2,814 – one yard more than the previous No. 2 quarterback, Jamie Curtis (1989-92). The school’s career passing yards leader is Austin Berry with 3,744. He also now holds the CCHS single-season passing yards records with 2,020.

For the Rockets first season back in Class A football after four years toiling in the much-tougher 2A district, coach Starnes called it a success.

“These kids have lifted this program back to where it needs to be,” Starnes said. “They have done a great job to get us to where we were tonight, in the second round of the playoffs. They brought some excitement back, and I couldn’t be prouder of them."

The Eagles will play at Russellville – a 38-36 winner over Campbellsville – in next week's regional championship game.

Rockets take advantage of Caverna miscues

Gavin Dickerson (4) tackles Caverna's Anthony Eakles.
MARION, Ky. – Crittenden County’s defense forced seven turnovers as the Rockets manhandled Caverna 42-16 in the opening round of the Class A playoffs.

The Rockets (7-4) travel next week to Bardstown to take on Bethlehem (8-3), a 69-6 winner over Fulton County.

Senior running back Dylan Hollis scored three touchdowns for the Rockets, sending Crittenden into the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

The Colonels (2-9) fumbled six times and threw an interception, giving Crittenden plenty of scoring opportunities. Unlike the previous week at Ballard Memorial – when the Rockets misfired on offense after collecting turnovers – Crittenden made Caverna pay nearly every time the Colonels coughed it up.

Devin Hopper recovered three fumbles himself and the Rockets responded with touchdowns each time. Jacob Russelburg, Dylan Smith and Travis McKinney also recovered fumbles. Cody Belt intercepted a Caverna pass late in the game.

The Rockets turned five of the turnovers into points and led 42-0 early in the third period.

From there, Crittenden unloaded the bench and gave its starters a break while the mercy-rule continuous clock sped up the game. Caverna lineman Jesse Johnson scooped up a Rocket fumble and scored in the third period and the Colonels tacked on a late touchdown pass, too.

Other Records, Notes, and Last Week  Recap
- The 1,685 passing yards through the first ten games of the season for Nick Castiller are the most passing yards ever for a Rocket QB in the first ten games of a season.  Austin Berry passed for 1,611 in 2004
- Nick Castiller had his ninth, 100+ yard passing game of the season which is the second most ever in a single season.  The single season record holder for most 100 yard passing games in a season is Austin Berry with 10 (2004).
- In the last 15 years, only one player has had 100 or more tackles at the end of the regular season.  Gaige Courtney had 104 tackles to end the 2008 regular season.  This year, Dylan Smith has amassed 108 tackles during the regular season.

- Ballard Memorial scored more than 12 points in each quarter last week.  The CC opponent scoring more than 10 points in each quarter has occurred only three other times in the last 21 seasons (Massac County, 2007; Owensboro Catholic, 2012; Murray, 2014).
- CC is averaging 12.3 first downs per game this season.  12.3 is the highest average per game since 2005 when that team average 13.5.
- Since 1995, CC has averaged less rushing attempts than the 31.1 they are averaging this season only once. In 2010, CC averaged 29.5 rushing attempts per game.
- The highest single game rushing total for an individual this season is the 142 put up by Nick Castiller in the season opener.  142 yards is the lowest “season high” for a Rocket team since 2004 when that squad did not have anyone rush for more than 136 yards during the season.
- CC is averaging 13.3 points in the first quarter this season.  That average is the highest 1st quarter average since 1994. The second highest during that period is 12.7 for the 2010 squad.
- The 11.2 points the Rockets are averaging for 2nd quarter scoring is the third highest total in the last 21 seasons.  The highest is 13.8 during the 2005 season.
