2023 Class 2A, District 1 Review

  • Mayfield (3-1) – Mayfield dispatched McCracken County without much issue.  They are “open” this week.
  • Murray (4-1) – Murray won last week on a forfeit by Fulton County.  McCracken County is up next for the Tigers and will be an interesting one to watch.
  • Caldwell County (0-5) – McCracken County crushed the Tigers 43-7 at home.  The Tigers did manage 268 total yards but the Mustangs managed 495 total yards.  Caldwell takes on Christian County (1-3) this week.  Expect a close ballgame but Christian pulls out the 11 point win.

Playoff Preview Class 2A, District 2

  • Owensboro Catholic (5-0) – Henderson County was dispatched by OC last week, 41-21.  At Crittenden County this week.
  • Todd County Central (2-3) – McLean rolled over TCC, 46-28.  Look for TCC to pick up its third win on the against 0-5, Russellville.  TCC by 19.
  • Edmonson County (1-4) – EC will take on Clinton County.  Clinton County lost 16 games in-a-row over the course of three seasons but has turned things around to win both games the last two weeks.  The turn around isn’t enough to overcome a slumping Edmonson County.  EC by 15.
  • Fort Campbell (2-3) – Fort Campbell achieved a second win of the year against winless Fort Knox, 42-13.  Fulton County is up next.  Fort Campbell by 20.

Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) – Trying to Figure it Out

Currently, Crittenden County ranks 6th in RPI for 2A.  Unfortunately, two teams CC will most likely need to beat in the playoffs in order to win a regional title are ranked ahead of them (Mayfield and Owensboro Catholic).  OC is #1 and Mayfield is #3.

Crittenden County is the highest ranked 2-2 team.

There are calculation changes which are significantly affecting the RPI figures in 2023.  CC has an RPI of 0.91349 which is the highest we have ever had.  The previous high was 0.656 which ranked 6th in 1A at the time.

The portion of the calculation which is helping CC the most is our opponent's winning percentage.

Our win-loss record is hurting our RPI significantly.

It seems as though scheduling teams that win a lot of games and/or play teams that win a lot of games can overcome a less than stellar win-loss record by us.

For instance, beating Fulton County 73-0 won't help you as much as losing to Owensboro Catholic, 56-7, will.  Fulton County does not win a lot of games and typically schedules weak opponents who they hope to have a chance at just being competitive with.

O'Cath wins a lot and typically their opponents are better than average teams both of which will help our RPI this season no matter if we win or lose to them this week.

Additionally, most of the time we will want our opponents to have success outside of when they play us.  The more they win the better our RPI.

Remember, the score of games are irrelevant as it is not taken into the calculation whatsoever.

This is a link to KHSAA webpage which explains the RPI calculation.
